Notes
To honour the buildings as they once were, Martin Brent incorporates indicators of contemporary life in his photographs of Miami South Beach's Art Deco district.
The photographer explains, "The images are my reaction to seeing the buildings as individual survivors of the era". He describes how he found the district run down and cracking at the edges. With Miami's changing reputation, these buildings memorialise a bygone era. The district contains 950 historic buildings in the Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern style. The distinct pastel colours are emphasised by Martin giving the works a timeless quality and a feel of Art Deco illustrations and publications of the time.
Martin Brent uses traditional and digital lens based media to question the notions of space, belonging and ownership. As part of his masters degree, his current work is focused on identity in the context of the nation state, exploring borders and alternative historical timelines.
