Notes
John Hoyland RA (1934–2011) was one of Britain’s leading abstract artists of the late 20th century.
The Gnome is a great example of his joyful use of bold colour and abstract forms to push the boundaries of image making.
Born in 1930s Sheffield in 1934, Hoyland attended Sheffield College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. His first solo exhibition in 1964 (Marlborough Gallery, London) was quickly followed by a museum show at the Whitechapel Gallery three years later. He went on to become one of Britain’s leading and most vivid abstract artists. Retrospectives of Hoyland’s work were held by the Royal Academy of Art in 1999 and Tate St Ives in 2006 and today his works are held in public and private collections the world over.
