Notes

Hannah Brown was drawn to this field on the outskirts of Crediton, a market town in Devon, because of its in-betweenness: “It was not cared for in the way a public area would be for recreational purposes, nor was it cultivated”, she says, “but in my opinion it was beautiful”.

This oil sketch emits a quiet poignancy. At the time of making the work, an agricultural supply store was about to erect large new premises on the field. That store has now been built and an ancient oak tree removed to create its car park. Hannah’s work provides a small record of how the space was before.

Sketch for Tesco field, 3 is part of a series of oil paintings of the same subject and forms part of a larger body of work that draw on the English landscape tradition. Hannah's painting and sculptures offer interpretations of seemingly bucolic scenes, all emptied of people and obvious signs of life under a familiar, flat English sky.
