The Top 100 - Timed Auction
31 MAY 2021 - 24 JUNE 2021Notes
'Fix (Fern)' is a hand-painted reproduction of a page from a catalogue of pioneering photographer Henry Fox Talbot. In ‘fixing’ the photographic image to paper, Fox Talbot mobilised the image as an infinitely reproducible entity. The painting becomes a surface at which the mobilised image is physically re-fixed as a finite, unique object. Fox Talbot developed the photographic process in part due to his own feeling of insufficient draftsmanship. It allowed a process by which objects could be captured ‘without the aid of the artist’s pencil.’ However, when painted a human hand is re-introduced to the image.
