Notes

Casper’s work focuses on the intimacy of a portrait, where fleeting and unexpected moments become a place for reflection. The ecstatic experiences of nightclubbing and the tender and fragile moments of the morning after led to a series of works shown at The National Portrait Gallery, London. Recently Casper’s work has focused more directly on the relationship between the subject and viewer, magnifying moments and highlighting expressions in different ways. Faces lit in a cameo of light glimmer on stainless steel and aluminium or are veiled in painted silk.

New large-scale oil paintings utilize classical works, and these museum pieces are reinterpreted to convey the sentiments present within the Nightclubbing paintings. The ecstasy of angels and saints is emphasized, and the painted outcomes are places where pigment, fabric and porcelain reveal movement and speak of intimacy.

Casper White is a Welsh artist based in Cardiff.
