Morning at the Castle walls was painted in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus, from life. I spent most of the winter in Cyprus, working on a collection of pleinair paintings, as the crisp winter sunshine, warm sandstone, and rich historical context and ongoing political upheaval is to me a compelling combinatiom. Painted as covid continues to disrupt travel, and Northern Cyprus being a backwater for tourists at any time, the chivalry, hedonism and terror of the past at this Venetian crusader castle collided with the sweetness of nature and friendliness of the inhabitants to make it a privilege to be painting there.
