The Artist is a portrait of my husband, Geoff, who is, in fact, an artist. On one level this is a visual pun - a painting of paint about a painter. On another it delves into the psyche of the creator: paint flows like blood over the artist's face, as if it is his life force, an essential substance of his being and the substance which has created his likeness. For the artist, creativity is, indeed, an inextricable part of his or her existence, the lens through which they interpret the meaning of life, their religion.

Notes
As a figurative artist, I seek to explore the human condition. Often my subjects are caught in the act of self-confrontation in situations which are disconcerting or improbable. However, these figures are not symbols, but highly detailed representations of real people, with real emotions and experiences.
I work in oil on canvas, densely layering the paint to create an effect realistic at a distance, yet richly textured in proximity. In this way, I aim to portray an intensely physical and intimate rendition of the subject's 'moment'.
