Notes

The haematite from the now disused Florence Mine in Cumbria has a rich deep red pigment.  The name of the mineral is derived from the Greek for blood - ‘haema’. It can be used as a drawing medium by itself or be mixed with other ingredients to make egg tempera or acrylic paint, or as a glaze for ceramics.

I’m trying to make the viewer look longer and harder, to have a one-on-one relationship with landscape painting, to make them curious and find some joy. The places depicted in my work are partly an invention, full of contrasts and spontaneity. They combine memories and motifs of places I have lived or longingly imagined. They are an idea of a place and the melancholy of longing and wanting to belong. An unfashionable romanticism grounded in the act of painting.

Gordon Dalton was born in Middlesbrough, 1970. He lives in Saltburn by the Sea, UK. He is represented by Aleph Contemporary and a member of the Contemporary British Painting group.
