About

Karen Turner (b.1978, London) is an award-winning figure artist whose oil paintings are a commentary on the weight of expectations. Focusing on the physical body and the scrutiny to which it is commonly subjected, her works explore what society expects of a woman, the ways in which a woman’s physical shape is often considered to define her, and the impact that this has on her life and sense of self.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

Miniature tasters of my larger works, each of these four postcards is an examination of society’s traditionally narrow view of beauty, and the pressure placed on women to conform to a particular physical ideal. Close-cropped to suggest direct scrutiny, the figure in each postcard is depicted devoid of surroundings as a representation of the way in which women, their choices and their bodies are so often are judged without context.
