About

Sarah was born in Grimsby in 1989, moving to Leeds to study BA (Hons) Fine Art International, at the University of Leeds 2007-2011 (with one year at L’Ecole Supérieure d’Art de Grenoble 2009-2010).

Sarah's work has two main drivers: firstly, the need to process and respond to personal and collective human experience, and secondly, the never-ending quest to figure out how to do that with paint and surface.

Recent themes in her practice include identity, connection, spirituality, religion, memory, and dreams, often in the context of the natural world.

She is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, and is a studio holder at Assembly House.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

When I looked into the work that War Child UK are doing, I thought about all of the stories I've heard and read of borders, boats, fear, loss, and loneliness, along with the relentless media frenzy around 'protecting our waters'. Most of us in the UK, self included, can't even begin to imagine the experiences that some children go through. Still, I reflected on the way in which we all carry memories from childhood through life.

A lot of my work is rooted in personal history and memory alongside mythologies surrounding water, as I grew up on the coast. Whenever I am near water, the past feels much more tangible. For these paintings, I cast my mind back to my own childhood, and some of the feelings from that time that still resurface today.
