About

My paintings have always attempted to depict the drama of the London street. Some pieces are compositions based on observations of everyday life. Other works comprise ‘portraits' of lost places and human stories observed on the streets of Newham in East London, where I have lived (almost continuously) since the early ‘70s.

One of the drivers of my work has been noticing how time is found in the environment in buildings and fragments of the detritus of earlier generations. As I compose my paintings, I discover the signs and remains of edifices, objects and people from the past and I animate my works with ghostly shadows of these vanished places and people.

My paintings are characterised by attention to detail, vivid colour and an intentional technique drawn from using multiple layers of transparent glaze, which enables luminous colour to be provided. My work can be seen on https://ferhafarooqui.weebly.com

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

My work usually captures the drama of the city environment and most particularly aspects of London. So, I was delighted to be invited to produce a series of 4 small painted postcards using my style of working to mark International Women’s Day. The paintings I have produced celebrate women in a variety of everyday social settings in sisterhood, conversation, love, motherhood and friendship.
