Notes
London based artist and sign writer, Matt Rogers paints joyful exclamations onto the reverse of glass panels. Matt, who has an extensive knowledge of typography, chooses recognisable fonts to portray uplifting phrases.
'Reverse glass' painting is a technical process used throughout history from the Byzantine Empire to 19th century clock makers. The paint is applied to the back of a glass panel so that the final image is viewed through the clear glass at the front.
In this process, the layers of paint are built up in a very particular order, often painting the finer details first (such as the pink lettering in this work). The light reflected from the surface of the finished work gives glass painting its unique crisp and clear appearance.
