Notes
Arnold Newman is renowned for his portraits of various artists and politicians, such as John F. Kennedy, Harry S. Truman, Marilyn Monroe, Pablo Picasso, Audrey Hepburn, and Igor Stravinsky. Newman set out to photograph his subjects in their own environments, using the details in the surrounding to further illustrate each person’s craft or purpose. This image of Martha Graham in her dance studio is a fitting example of his style. Her straightforward pose and expression is presented in visual symmetry to the minimal design of the room.
Arnold Newman’s work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Art Institute of Chicago; Philadelphia Museum of Art; International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House, Rochester, NY; Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, among many others. He was an Adjunct Professor of Advanced Photography at Cooper Union, NY.
