Notes

“This work was made using a Japanese marbling technique called Suminagashi which translates as ‘floating ink’. Here I systematically dipped acrylic paint into a water bath using three colours, pink, white and yellow creating concentric circular patterns. This marbling technique is incredibly sensitive to movement, including breath, so I have 'sighed' lightly onto the surface of the water to produce a unique ripple. The pattern-making is both mechanical and left to chance, leaving only my breath or ‘sigh’ as the evidence of the artist's hand.”- Karen David, 2021.

Karen David is an artist, curator and lecturer, currently completing a PhD in Fine Art at the University of Worcester with a studio focus on fictional narrative, communes and parascience. She lives and works in London where she is a Lecturer in Painting at London Metropolitan University.

Karen David's practice examines notions of science fantasy using materials such as tie-dye, marbling, crystals, architectural diagrams, meditations cards and The X-Files, which are collapsed into hybrid objects that traverse through history, place, characters and genres.

Her research has taken her to the Southwest American Desert to explore its landscape and mythologies and to inform an ongoing project of a fictional artists' commune where residents investigate links between colour field painting, new age memorabilia and new possibilities in gardening.
