Luke studied Fine Art at the Cardiff School of Art and Design, and at the L'Ecole De Beaux-Art in Nantes, France. Luke moved back to Cornwall in 2008 and the Cornish landscape has become the inspiration for his work. Taking influence from romantic painters, Casper David Friedrich and Turner, and painters such as Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler to contemporary painters such as Fred Cuming RA; Luke’s work is about the memory, feeling, and experience of times spent in the Cornish landscape, whether swimming or surfing, walking, or driving. Snippets of visual information are gathered and become the starting point for a painting. Memories become linked with the paintings and paintings become linked with memories. As the paintings develop, thoughts about the painting start to emerge and are fed back into the painting. This cyclical process is reflected in Luke’s approach to painting; he starts by saturating the board with paint then sands, scrapes, and strips to create texture and detail. This process of adding and eroding is repeated and repeated, building the painting over many months, echoing the Cornish landscape that inspires the paintings.

Luke’s work has won him the Barcelona International Gallery award and seen his work selected for the 166 RWA Annual Open Exhibition and 2020 Royal Society of Marine Artists exhibition in London. Luke will be teaching a number of short courses at the Newlyn School of Art in 2022.
