Hugh Mendes is a contemporary British painter born in Germany in 1955. Mendes studied at Chelsea School of Art and City & Guilds of London Art School. 

Mendes is recognised for his finely rendered obituary paintings that operate simultaneously as portrait and still life. Eva Hesse: Joy is part of an ongoing series of works on paper derived from original newspaper collages. Relating to the series of Artist Obituary Paintings, they are reworked and incorporate newspaper headlines from the Covid-19 pandemic.
