Notes

This acrylic on canvas is Tyler Watson's ode to the humble potted plant, the monstera.

As with all of his works, "New Pop" artist Tyler Watson reimagines the most domestic and mundane of objects as if they were held in higher esteem. A commentary on the often overlooked importance of everyday life, Spanish Walls is piece that depicts his own house plant from his studio imbued with the colour pallet that was inspired by his time spent in Spain.

Tyler creates works themed around his personal view of Britain through a sense of nostalgia and recognition. His playful balancing of nostalgia and recognition is a key aspect of his painting's narrative as he takes his audience to a place they may already know, but provide them with an alternate point of view.

Inspired by Philip Guston, a painter from the New York School (which included Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning), Tyler began reflecting more deeply on the details of his everyday surroundings. The mundane became a symbol of daily ritual. A symbol he then was drawn to incorporate in his artwork as a glimpse of his everyday life as an artist.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
