The Spring Auction 2019 (48/66)

Notes

London-based painter Charley Peters, creates visually pleasing, vibrant works that are filled with a deeper academic exploration of how today's digitally savvy society interact with art.

Like Bi Linear Matrix Array  this work uses optical illusions to exercise the eyes of today's viewer - a viewer whose daily life is now filled with a quick succession of images on screens.

The London-based painter Charley Peters, continues to push the spatial potential of painted surfaces. She applies subtle variations in colour, tone and scale to construct illusionary light and structural depth.

Starting from an interest in hard-edged abstract artwork, her work considers how painting has evolved in the context of contemporary media. Through smartphones and tablets, today's society experience thousands of 'flat' images, in quick succession every day, that lack texture and material.

To explore the material nature of paint in this image-hungry world, Charley applies layer upon layer of paint to her works. Gently building up and juxtaposing the different colours, she explores the disrupted relationship of pictorial composition with our experiences of reading space, material and abstract form in the post-digital image world.

Another of Charley's works included in The Spring Auction can be seen here.
