Notes

Grace Lee studied BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths and MFA Fine Art at Slade, and was awarded the Prankerd Jones Memorial Prize in 2020 and the Bartolomeu dos Santos Memorial Prize in 2021. They work across painting and animation, and have recently exhibited with South Parade and Huxley Parlour.

“I'm repeatedly drawn to contradiction, when two seemingly opposing forces exist together. That friction between fear and excitement or nurturing and overbearing, a state that could so quickly tip from one to the other but never fully commits to either side. Animals and objects become the perfect vessel for this ambiguity, under our command but perhaps also entering with an agency of their own. They come with their own struggle for dominance, but one that is frequently humorous in delivery. I think contradiction is a defiant state and so can't help but be cheeky. Everything is a joke, and everything is completely sincere.”
