An Art on a Postcard Mini Auction Curated by India Rose James
07 APRIL 2022 - 21 APRIL 2022Notes
About
Kristy M Chan (b. 1997, Hong Kong) traverses figuration and abstraction to form energetic, intuitive and autobiographical compositions. Living between Hong Kong and London, Chan revisits incidents and emotions she has encountered, she names her painting process ‘irrational conversion’. Employing a distinctive, kaleidoscopic palette of vivid hues, Chan’s paintings distil the spectacle of city life from an outsider's perspective, imaging the interplay of how her identity is informed by both Eastern and Western cultures. She reclaims these personal moments into a subconscious and visceral vision of our shared contemporary existence.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
The three AOAPs engage with the contemporarily ubiquitous norms of self-improvement, self-limitation and self-observation within the fitness culture. They highlight the obsessive potentials within and the possibilities of reclaiming physical challenges as sources of personal joy, rather than punishing rituals of adherence to standards imposed upon the individual. "Pistol Squat 5kg" and "Pistol Squat 8kg" celebrate the progression of perfecting a weighted pistol squat, an exercise that challenges strength and mobility. "Protein Powder" foregrounds the artist's fascination towards protein structures under the microscope and portrays Chan's enjoyment of protein powder in her daily porridge.
