Introducing Louisa Clark

An artist whose practice revolves around the translation of our environments and our interactions with them. Central to her work are line and tone, which serve as catalysts for her observations and artistic creations. Clark is particularly fascinated by the materiality of line, as it enables her to explore tactility, tone, and colour in her artworks. While she has a strong focus on sculpture, she doesn't see her sculptures as polished pieces but rather as a process that informs her two-dimensional works.

Clark's artistic process involves translating fragments of her surrounding environment, often overlooked structures, into unfired clay sculptures. These rigid and robust structures are transformed into smaller, doughy, and fragile sculptures. By working with these sculptures as a first process, she is able to infuse her paintings with a sense of joyous freedom. Manipulating scale and perspective within her sculptures allows her to convey the importance, unimportance, and fragility of the fragments she depicts.

The artist's work is deeply rooted in her surroundings and how she observes them. Her focus on our environment and the act of observation is integral to her creative process. Clark aims to offer different perspectives on familiar things, inviting viewers to engage in a playful observation. The ambiguous nature of her subject matter encourages individual experiences and interpretations when viewing her artworks.

Louisa Clark's art strives to bridge the gap between our lived experiences and the artistic representation of our surroundings. Through her exploration of line, tone, and sculpture, she invites viewers to reconsider their relationships with the environments they inhabit, and to find beauty and significance in overlooked details. Her work is a testament to the power of observation and the transformative potential of art.
