Notes

Ragnar Jonasson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, in 1974. He graduated with a BA from the Icelandic Academy of Arts in 2004 and with an MFA from Glasgow School of Arts in 2008. Ragnar’s work explores painting as not just a surface but as a medium in itself, displaying playful experiments with brushstrokes and texture as fundamental elements. He also works in other mediums such as photography and sculpture, and has worked collaboratively with artists from both Iceland and the UK. His work has been shown in various galleries and museums around the world and was recently included in one of the most comprehensive books on Icelandic art history.

Close to Closure is a painting made entirely out of acrylic paint. Although the surface is almost completely flat it holds different textures in the pictorial field that dance around each other to create its own artistic and textural language that is very much about the action of painting and colour. The edges of the painting allude to different layers of previous paintings, showing the sense of time within the process.
