Notes

Sometimes music, in an abstract way, plays a vital role in my creative process, and sometimes the work is literally a response to a particular piece of music.
The title is derived from a sacred motet written by Vivaldi, where the slashing strings and vocal pyrotechnics evoke a tempest. The text, like so many baroque works, likens the human condition to a ship tossed about in a storm. The metaphor aside, the way that the music moves between tempi, texture and feeling shares something with the ordering of bands of colour and light across the surface of this work.
In turbato mare irato, is one of two pieces created in the past year as a response to Vivaldi's motets. The other, Sum in medio tempestatum, which was created last year, has been sold to a collector in America.
