Notes

Hugh Mendes is a contemporary British painter born in Germany in 1955. Mendes studied at Chelsea School of Art and City and Guilds of London Art School. Obituary: Holly Woodlawn is part of Mendes’ ongoing series of Obituaries, especially obituaries of artists that are simultaneously portrait and still life.

Within the series, Mendes made a mini series of obituary paintings memorialising characters associated with Andy Warhol’s Factory, including Holly Woodlawn, Lou Reed, Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Taylor Mead. The painting of Taylor Mead is part of the Soho House collection and is on permanent display at Dumbo House in Brooklyn.

The Puerto Rican actress and Warhol superstar, most known for the movies ‘Trash’ and ‘Women in Revolt’, was also immortalised in the Lou Reed song ‘Walk on the Wild Side’.
