Notes

This etching is inspired by the fisherman in Dungeness on the Kent coastline.

Silhouetted by the low evening light, a fisherman stands on sand bank in the low tide; his line patiently waiting for the last catch of the day.

Etching and aquatint are intaglio printmaking techniques. The image is incised into a surface and the incised lines and sunken areas hold the ink onto which the paper is then pressed. But unlike etching, aquatint is used to create tonal effects and shades rather than lines.

To give a sense of movement and spontaneity in her work, Nicola does not plan her aquatints, rather she works directly on to the plate.
