Notes

About

Carrie (@carriestanleyartist) is a figurative oil painter based at 106Studios in Brighton. She is passionate about exploring female identity and personal history through making large scale, visceral and colourful works. These often develop through automatic processes with colours expressing psychological mind states and mark making as a response to the materiality of the paint its-self. She was awarded an Arts council grant last year to explore transmuting trauma through creative practises of making these experiences visual, this project is ongoing (@visual_grief_diary).

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artworks

These works explore female sensuality and identity and the notion of strength in vulnerability. They are translations of life drawings made during lockdown and the use of a screen for exploring nudity made the experience more intimate. I observed empowerment in the open poses and really wanted to translate this feeling in these tiny paintings. The titles are taken from Old Gaelic Irish words meaning life source, reveal and courage.
