Bob Thall (United States, b. 1948), Chicago, 1980
Bob Thall is known for formally rigorous and deadpan portrayals of the urban and suburban landscape. Chicago, 1980 demonstrates Thall’s distinct ability to dramatize architectural elements with his carefully chosen vantage point and use of light and shadow.
Bob Thall is best known for his photographs of the Chicago area. He received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in Photography (1998), and taught Photography at Columbia College Chicago from 1978 to 2017, serving as Chair of the department 1999–2011. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the Center for Creative Photography, among others.
