Through straight-on framing, precise focus, and uniform lighting, Victoria Sambunaris depicts the grandeur of the American landscape and the subtle, yet sometimes overpowering, cues to the country’s capitalist mentality. As she explains, “It is the anomalies of an ordinary landscape that have become the locus of my work: massive warehousing, infinite distribution facilities, and systematized shipping terminals. These numerous paradigmatic structures, I sense, portend the future of landscape and our relationship to it.”
Victoria Sambunaris’s work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, NY; and the Lannan Foundation, NM, among many others. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including a 2021 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship.
