Zavier Ellis is an international gallerist, curator, artist and collector. He was born in Windsor in 1973 and studied at Manchester University and London Art School. He is founder and director of CHARLIE SMITH LONDON, a vibrant contemporary art gallery in Shoreditch, London established in 2009.
As well as curating exhibitions globally, Ellis has exhibited widely including Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Saatchi Gallery, and Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles. His work is featured in notable collections including the seminal Sammlung Annette und Peter Nobel, Zurich.
This work is a highly physical, textured piece made of oil, oil bar, acrylic, spray paint and collage on canvas. It is part of an ongoing series that explores the French Revolution. Ellis draws on historical events, revolutionary politics, nationalism, art history, myth and magic, religion and insanity. Each series involves intensive research that informs the choice of collage elements, colour codes, measurements and text, which serves to create an internal and personalised symbolism.
