Nature and the natural world are the most powerful inspiration in my work and my colour harmonies are often derived from specific chromatic effects I see; some of these get burned into my imagination and become the basis for a particular palette. Often my colour palette relies on blending complimentary contrasts, which, when paired, create beautiful and electric optical harmonies. In The Warmth of Other Dawns, I have limited the palette further to a variety of warm and cool variations of violet and pink, blended with increasing amounts of white to create the effect of fading away. The technique here is one I have developed using many layers of gesso, the ground applied to my canvases, and sanding the surface as layers of paint are laid on, to create the effect of colour fading into the ground of the canvas.
