Notes
Ruth Schnell (Austria, b. 1956), Patterns of Perception, 2004
Ruth Schnell is an artist, professor, and curator working within the intricate intersections of art and science. Schnell has leveraged computer technology since the mid-1980s, before the now-abundant implementation of such tools in visual art. In this three-dimensional piece, she works with a circuit board with approximately 100 LED lights to project words onto the plywood surface, creating a visual language that plays with the viewer’s sense of perception.
Ruth Schnell has been featured in exhibitions at many places, including the Galaxy Museum of Contemporary Art in Chongqing, China; the Print Screen Festival in Holon, Israel; and the iX Symposium in Montréal, Canada, where she also received the Visionary Pioneer Award. In 1995, she represented Austria at the 46th Biennale di Venezia. Schnell is Chair of the Institute of Fine and Head of the Digital Art Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where she has also taught since 1987.
