Using a sewing machine to rapidly 'draw' figures onto cloth, Tina Crawford is a free-embroidery artist based in Deptford, South-East London.
"The sewing machine makes me come alive; the fluidity, the speed, the risk – it's an incredible instrument that I found by chance to keep me sane and is now an extension of my hands. I work using a number of materials from paper to food packaging; free embroidery is a wonderful medium”
"Skeletal pieces work so well with embroidery, because stitching is like the skeletal of clothes but I love the idea of stitching animal skeletons as the initial reaction is 'is it a dinosaur?'... I deliberately don’t embroider dinosaurs – this particular work is a cute rabbit."
Tiny Crawford is a Central Saint Martins graduate and has had works exhibited throughout London, Brighton and New York. Her work is included in many private, public and corporate collections across the UK and USA including Soho House, Ludlow House (New York), the Napkin Museum, Warpole Bay Hotel and The Oval Tavern in Croydon.
Her work is collected by Grayson Perry, Martin Parr, Emily Watson, Paul Smith and Mary Portas.
