"This canvas is very small but I wanted my painting to still feel strong and dynamic, with a sense that even on a small surface area you can experience a lot of visual information and some complex spatial relationships. It is an abstract painting that is flirting with figuration and hyperreality, I like to think about where the boundaries of abstract painting lie and how I can challenge them.London-based painter Charley Peters, creates visually pleasing, vibrant works that are filled with a deeper academic exploration of how today's digitally savvy society interact with art". Charley Peters, 2020.
The London-based painter Charley Peters, continues to push the spatial potential of painted surfaces. She applies subtle variations in colour, tone and scale to construct illusionary light and structural depth.
Starting from an interest in hard-edged abstract artwork, her work considers how painting has evolved in the context of contemporary media. Through smartphones and tablets, today's society experience thousands of 'flat' images, in quick succession every day, that lack texture and material.
To explore the material nature of paint in this image-hungry world, Charley applies layer upon layer of paint to her works. Gently building up and juxtaposing the different colours, she explores the disrupted relationship of pictorial composition with our experiences of reading space, material and abstract form in the post-digital image world.
Charley Peters completed a PhD in Fine Art Theory and Practice in 2006, which explored notions of interior space in art and its relationship to Freud’s writings on The Uncanny.
She has held academic posts lecturing in Fine Art and Critical Theory at institutions including University of the Arts London, Manchester Metropolitan University and Victoria and Albert Museum. She has held visiting lectureships at Royal College of Art, University of Wales Institute Cardiff and Leeds University.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including: Saatchi Gallery (London), Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Art (Coventry), PaintLounge at Sluice Expo 2018 (Berlin), dalla Rosa Gallery (London), Z20 Sara Zanin Gallery (Rome), Yantai Art Museum (Yantai), Art 2 (New York) and Boecker Contemporary (Heidelberg).
Charley's written work on painting has been published in Instantloveland, A-N, Turps Banana and Abstract Critical. She is a peer reviewer for The Journal of Contemporary Painting and is on the editorial board of Turps Banana.
She is also an independent curator, recently curating the group exhibition Merge Visible, Contemporary British Painting Through a Virtual Window for the Contemporary British Painting group.
She is currently Course Leader of MA IVM at LCC/University of the Arts London and a painting mentor at Turps Art School.
